How to get a Christmas Casual job

Christmas casual jobs are a great way to have a little more cash over the holiday period. They’re perfect for students who have full-on timetables during semester, part-time workers who want to bump up their workload for a few months — anyone who is looking for more work without the long-term commitment.

Christmas casual jobs also a way to get some work experience on your resume, as they often hire people with little or no experience. As long as you put your best foot forward in your interviews and show that you’re keen to learn, you should have success in landing yourself a role as a Christmas casual.

So, how do you get a Christmas Casual job?

For the most part, it’s the same as any other role – write a good resume, add a killer cover letter and interview well. However, there are a few other things you can do to boost your chances of getting a job as a Christmas casual.

Don’t wait until December

If you want to become a Christmas casual, the worst thing you can do is leave it too late. If you’re thinking you’ll find a Christmas job in December.

Businesses hiring for Christmas casuals want to leave enough time to train their new hires before the holiday mayhem hits.

The last thing they want is for newbies to be overwhelmed by the hordes of shoppers on Christmas Eve who left their shopping just a little too late.

Show your love for the brand

If you’re looking for a Christmas casual role, chances are you’ll be working in retail.

My favourite trick is to wear or take a piece of their brand with you to the interview.

Headed for an interview with Peter Alexander? Don’t be afraid to wear a PJ shirt. Chuck on your Nikes for an interview with Nike, take your tea in a T2 cup for your interview with T2… you get the idea.

By showing that you’re already a customer, you position yourself as someone who will be eager to learn about and sell their product.

Smash your group interview

Group interviews can be daunting, but they’re your ticket to that Christmas casual job you’re coveting.

In a group interview, you’ll be tested on your ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and problem solve on the go.

But your best foot forward by leaning into every activity and letting your personality shine.

If your nerves are overwhelming you just remember that you’ll probably become friends with some of the people when you get the job, so you’ll all have a shared experience to cringe about together.
