How to use the XYZ method on your resume
You’ve probably read that the goal of your resume should be to showcase your skills and achievements.
This advice is everywhere, and it’s good advice, but when you get down to it, how do you actually do that?
With the XZ method!
This is the method that Google recruiters recommend job seekers use as it’s one of the easiest ways to make achievement the star of your resume.
Why do you need to spotlight achievements?
If you don’t include achievements on your resume, you’re just providing a list of job descriptions to your future employer.
By including your achievements, you’re proving to hiring managers that you’re someone whose work has an impact. Managers want to see that you’re able to produce results and help the company achieve their overall goal.
Think of your achievements as a key to unlocking the opportunities you’re applying to.
So, what is the XYZ method?
It’s a results first technique you can use when dot pointing your achievements and responsibilities.
X = what you accomplished
Y = measured by
Z = how you accomplished it
In other words,
Accomplished X as measured by Y by doing Z.
For example:
Improved retention rate by 15% by developing an effective customer care package.
Let’s break it down:
X = improved retention rate
Y = by 15%
Z = developing a customer care package
But what if you’re feeling that you haven’t achieved anything worthy enough for your resume?
First - have some confidence!
Next, take a look at these templates and figure out what experience you have to fit in these:
Organised X event that involved Y people which successfully promoted Z
Participated in Z which had a Y effect on X
Improved work process X by streamlining Z which increased team productivity by Y
Successfully delivered X to project Z which will result in Y
Contributed to X project by doing Z which resulted in Y
Try to aim for 1-2 achievements for each role you have listed on your resume.
When you’re next updating your resume, take some time to figure out what achievements will help you get hired. Think about times that you’ve worked on a project, been acknowledged for your work, implemented changes to workflows or met your KPIs.
Adding a few achievements to your resume is transformative to both your resume and your job hunting journey.
