3 things to NOT include on your resume
Trying to figure out what you should steer clear of when writing your resume? I’ve collated the three things I am always removing from my client’s resumes, and you should too.
These things are old fashioned, reveal too much personal info, and can sometimes hint at iffy business practices.
So, without further ado, here’s the three things you shouldn’t include on your resume.
Personal Details
I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, I’ll say it forever – don’t include your address, your age, your marital status, nationality or religious beliefs on your resume.
Why?
It’s very old fashioned. These details take up valuable space on your resume and will not help you land a job. Keep your personal life personal.
Side note: some countries like the UAE do require this info, so check the national standard if you’re applying somewhere outside of Australia.
Photos
If you have a headshot on your resume, consider removing it. You should be hired on your skills, experience and achievements, rather than what you look like.
Some companies request a headshot, so this is the only time I’ll include a headshot on a resume.
But! If you’re applying for a job and they’re requesting a pic, ask yourself why. Think about whether you want to work for a company that needs to see what you look like before they’ve even met you.
Unrelated Social Media Profiles
We’re all chronically online, but your future employer doesn’t need to have direct links to your social media profiles.
For my clients, I only include a link to their LinkedIn profile.
The only time you would include your social handles was if they DIRECTLY relate to the role and will give you an edge over the other applicants. For example, you’re a food photographer applying for a role at a food magazine and you include your professional instagram.
And while we’re here, set your personal profiles to PRIVATE while you’re job hunting.
