How to become a diesel mechanic
So, you want to be a diesel mechanic but not sure how to get there?
I sat down with Oliver, a 21 year old diesel mechanic, to ask him how he got his job.
So, what do you do?
I am a heavy diesel ag mechanic. Also known as a service technician.
What is a diesel mechanic?
A diesel mechanic is someone who diagnoses and repairs diesel engines and the machines they’re in.
How did you get an apprenticeship?
I applied for an apprenticeship with Hutcheon and Pearse (John Deere) when they advertised for their upcoming intake of apprentices. There was then a day of interviews in Wagga Wagga where they selected 12 people - one for each branch.
What does a diesel mechanic apprenticeship involve?
It is 4 years of learning the fundamentals of learning how different systems work and how different machines work. It’s very hands-on, you’re learning on the go from the technicians while also doing six weeks of study at TAFE per year.
What are the highlights of your role?
Getting out and about! My job allows me to work in the field on properties with different customers everyday. No day is the same and I get to use my specialised knowledge everyday. I’m also continuously learning.
What are the main challenges of your role?
Peak season during harvest can be a challenge, with the quantity of machines that we have to service. We end up working a lot of hours during this time which can be tough.
What piece of advice would you give someone looking to become a diesel mechanic?
Don’t think you know everything. Ask questions, it’s the only way to learn. Don’t be afraid to fail.
Where can a career as a diesel mechanic take you?
It can take you anywhere around the world as it’s a specialised trade. Further on in your career, you can move into management roles if that’s what you want to do.
